New Features in August 2024

Instagram has augmented the permissible quantity of photos, videos, or mixed media in carousel posts, now allowing up to 20 distinct items per post. This enhancement is a highly anticipated boon for creators on the platform, liberating them from the previous necessity of selecting only a limited subset of content. Additionally, this update has been extended to users in Europe, broadening its impact.

  • Some insights

Moreover, Instagram has introduced a significant enhancement in its messaging capabilities. According to insights from Radu Oncescu, a noted leaker of Instagram and Threads information (as previously highlighted by @mattnavarra), users will now have the capacity to initiate private conversations with accounts mentioned within stories.

This update represents a substantial shift in the platform’s communication dynamics. Instagram’s ‘Highlights’ are set to receive a dedicated tab, as revealed by the well-known tech leaker Alessandro Paluzzi. This new placement situates the ‘Highlights’ feature prominently within the profile grid. The anticipated introduction of this change is expected to liberate significant user interface space on the main profile page, as the ‘Highlights’ icons will be relocated from the primary display strip.

In another substantial update, Instagram is rolling out a new metric, termed ‘Views,’ applicable to all types of posts. As disclosed by Adam Mosseri in a recent vlog and further detailed in an official carousel post on the Instagram for Business account, this metric represents a major enhancement to the ‘Insights’ section of the app. The metric, ‘Views,’ will now serve as the primary performance indicator across all content formats on the platform. Notably, the existing metric for Reel plays will be rebranded as Reel views, while the same ‘Views’ metric will be uniformly applied to Photos, Carousels, and Stories.

2024 top Instagram report is also poised to introduce groundbreaking AI tools designed for both creators and regular users. Announced by Mosseri in an Instagram reel, the platform is preparing to launch its new AI functionalities within the United States. The first of these features, dubbed ‘Creator AI,’ is targeted at established creators seeking innovative ways to engage with their audience without the need for direct involvement. As illustrated in a provided screenshot, creators will have the ability to customize their own AI persona, which will interact with fans based on the creator’s content and preferences.

In a parallel development, Meta is significantly enhancing its AI chatbot, extending its availability to seven additional regions: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, and Cameroon. Users in these regions can now interact with the chatbot in seven newly supported languages: French, German, Hindi, Hindi-Romanized Script, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Moreover, Meta is introducing advanced AI tools, including the option to select different AI models tailored to specific tasks.

Among these new features is ‘Imagine me,’ which allows users to visualize themselves in fantastical scenarios. Additionally, users will have the capability to effortlessly add, remove, or edit objects within images while maintaining the integrity of the background. The ‘Edit with AI’ button is also being introduced for already generated images, streamlining the editing process.

To utilize this new feature, users simply need to tap the paper plane icon and select ‘Add note,’ with the additional option to choose the specific audience for their note.

  • Testing of Product Overlay Ads in Reels

In an effort to further capitalize on the growing popularity of Reels, Meta is testing a new advertising approach that allows for the incorporation of ads as overlays within Reels. Currently in a limited testing phase, this feature is available to a select group of advertisers. Meta has indicated that these ads may eventually appear either as banners on Reels or as short video snippets interspersed between them.

  • Expansion of Broadcast Channels to Larger Pages

Meta is nearing the completion of its development of custom AI chatbots modeled after famous personalities and influencers, as part of the initial rollout of the “Meta AI Studio” platform. This platform allows creators to develop AI chatbots that will interact with their fans on their behalf. For instance, a chatbot based on Don Allen Stevenson III can respond to fan inquiries in a style reflective of the original creator.

It is important to note that users will be informed that they are conversing with an AI representation of their favorite creator. The process of creating this AI persona will be relatively straightforward, with Meta guiding creators through a series of prompts designed to capture their unique interaction style.

While current tools already allow users to limit interactions—such as comments, DMs, tags, and mentions—to long-time followers or accounts they follow, this new feature introduces an additional option: limiting interactions to only those within the user’s ‘Close Friends’ list. This feature is particularly designed to assist teens who may be experiencing bullying or who have recently moved to a new environment and wish to initially limit their interactions.

  • Instagram’s Approach to Handling Negative Comments

Mosseri also provided insights into Instagram’s approach to managing harassing and bullying comments on creators’ posts. He advised creators to wait approximately an hour before checking their comments, as Instagram requires time to filter out and suppress negative comments, pushing them to the bottom of the post or removing them entirely. Additionally, Mosseri recommended that users employ the ‘Hidden Words’ and ‘Restrict’ features to further safeguard themselves against online harassment.
